5 Tips for Adjusting to Clear Aligner Therapy

Will clear aligners be uncomfortable? Not for long! Learn how to adjust quickly, minimize soreness, and keep your aligners clean for a smooth orthodontic treatment experience.

Clear aligners like Invisalign® and orthobrain help straighten your teeth without the noticeable look of metal braces. You can take them out when needed, and most people won’t even notice you’re wearing them. While they’re more comfortable than traditional braces, you’ll need some time to get used to wearing them.

If you’ve recently started clear aligner therapy, you might wonder what to expect during your initial adjustment period. Dr. Patricia Swaintek-Lamb and our team at Proud to Smile Dentistry in Bernardsville, New Jersey, can help you get used to your new aligners.

Here are five tips to help you settle into the process and maximize your treatment.

1. Wear your aligners as much as possible

The success of your clear aligner therapy depends mainly on how consistently you wear your aligners. For best results, you should wear them for 20-22 hours daily, removing them only when eating, drinking (anything other than water), brushing, or flossing.

Initially, you may feel tempted to take them out more often, but remember, the longer you wear them, the more effective they’ll be. If you don’t wear your aligners as instructed, your teeth may not move as expected, and your treatment could take longer than planned.

You may also experience increased discomfort if your teeth don’t progress as they should. We recommend that you develop a routine, only removing your aligners at the necessary times, to help you stay on track and see the best results.

2. Expect some discomfort at first

Feeling discomfort when you first start wearing clear aligners or switching to a new set is normal. As your teeth begin to shift, they may feel sore or tender, especially when you insert a new set of aligners. This discomfort is a sign that the aligners are working to move your teeth into the desired position.

To manage this discomfort, you can take an over-the-counter pain reliever like ibuprofen or acetaminophen. You can also try rinsing with warm salt water or holding a cold compress on your cheeks to feel better. Your mouth will feel sore for a day or two, until you adjust to the aligners. The good news? That soreness means your teeth are moving into the right position.

3. Keep your aligners clean

Clean your aligners regularly to protect your teeth and keep your treatment on track. If you don’t, bacteria and plaque can build up, causing bad breath, stains, or even cavities.

You can use a soft toothbrush and lukewarm water to gently brush your aligners whenever you remove them. Don’t use toothpaste, as it can scratch your aligners, making them more likely to collect plaque.

Instead, try using special cleaning crystals or solutions made for aligners to keep them fresh and clear. Just be sure to avoid hot water, as it can warp the aligners and affect their fit. Keeping your aligners clean will ensure they remain clear and comfortable, and help maintain your oral hygiene throughout your treatment.

4. Avoid eating or drinking with your aligners in

One of the significant advantages of clear aligners is that you can remove them when you eat or drink, which makes it easier to maintain your regular diet. It’s essential to remember that you should never eat or drink anything (other than water) with your aligners in place.

When you chew with your aligners on, food particles and sugars can get trapped between your teeth and the trays, increasing the risk of plaque buildup and cavities. Hot foods or drinks can warp the plastic, affecting how your aligners fit and reducing their effectiveness.

Get into the habit of removing your aligners before eating, and drink only water while wearing them. After eating or drinking, brush your teeth before putting your aligners back in.

5. Stay on top of your follow-up appointments

Clear aligner therapy is a progressive process requiring regular check-ups with our team. These appointments ensure your treatment is on track and your teeth move as planned.

During these visits, we may take scans or impressions to track your progress and determine whether we need to adjust your aligner plan.

While clear aligners are more convenient than traditional braces, staying committed to your treatment plan means attending follow-up appointments. We will also help you with any questions or concerns, ensuring everything stays on course for your desired outcome.

Adjusting to clear aligner therapy takes time and consistency

The bottom line? Wear your aligners consistently, manage temporary discomfort with over-the-counter pain relievers, and keep your aligners clean for optimal results.
